Question Sat Nav software with Ordinance Survey maps

Hey,

I do a lot of national trail walking and currently rely solely on the paper Ordinance Survey maps and a compass. I would like to purchase a hand held sat nav package that will do that work for me.

I've heard of the Garmin eTrex range and was wondering if any of their devices are any good. I've also heard of the Fugwai software packages. Do they work on a MDA Vario and are they any good too? There is also the Memory Map package which can be used with the Road Angel Adventurer 7000 but I can't seem to find anywhere where this is currently being sold.

My main requirements are:

* Ordinance Survey Maps (1:25000 Explorer Maps)
* Built in compass
* Value for money
* Budget - £280

So what do you guys recommend?

...I recommend a laminated paper OS map and a compass.. it won't 'crash', 'freeze', 'shut down' or run out of battery! You can put that £280 towards your ever increasing petrol prices to get to the place your going to walk, or for better equipment to walk in...

I would definitely recommend Fugawi.

Fugawi UK Digital Maps™ allows one to view the detailed maps, search for and find place names, print paper copies*, overlay an included detailed street network, connect a GPS receiver for real-time navigation and even upload maps to a Palm OS™ or Windows® Mobile 5 device* for handheld navigation.

And it offers:
1:50,000 scale Ordnance Survey maps for the region shown (¼ Great Britain)
1:250,000 scale Ordnance Survey maps for Great Britain

Beaker - Why do you recommend the Fugawi over all the other ones? What are the pros and cons?

Back2theOldSkool - I've got a lot of the laminated OS maps already but sometimes it is nice to allow someone (in this case something) else to do the work for you.

Yeah I see your point Sharan, I guess I'm prefer to do stuff manually instead of relying on a computer, even if it is a handheld GPS device/computer.

Didn't Nokia do some GPS stuff with the old Nokia 5140 phone? I guess tech's improved since then..
