Hello there,
I have a Nokia N96 phone package supplied by Vodafone. I also have a Nokia N95 too. The question I need to ask is about installing TomTom Version 6 on to the N96. I can install it on to the handset with no problem but once you click on the TomTom link in the Applications folder, it opens but just stays stuck on the TomTom page. I have this TomTom installed (by myself) on my N95 and works brilliantly with a seperate GPS Bluetooth receiver. Why will this TomTom not work on the new N96 handset? I save the TomTom on the phone's memory or do I need to save it on the mass memory instead? Regards Wesley D. Jordan |

The N96 runs a different version of the Symbian 60 operating system. Chances are that the TomTom software you've got will only run on S60 version 3 feature pack1 which is installed on the Nokia N95.
The N96 has Feature Pack 2. I'd check with TomTom to see if there is an update available to make it work on S60 V3 FP2, and I'd also check on the Nokia website for a software update for the N96. I've heard they have released an update for it already! If there isn't a solution, try giving Nokia Maps a go. You might be surprised how well it works! I've done a review on it on our blog if you want more information on it. Nokia Maps 2.0 - Mobile Fun |

I've just spoken with TomTom, and they say that their current version TomTom Navigator 6 won't work with the N96, they are adamant that it will only work on E50, E61, E65, N73, N80, which are all pretty old handsets now.
They did say that TomTom navigator 7 is due for release really soon, and that will work with the N96 and support the built in GPS receiver. (navigator 6 only supports external GPS receivers) So that leaves you with a few choices, you can wait, but there are no confirmed dates yet, You could use Garmin's equivalent - Garmin Mobile XT UK & Ireland (european version is due soon). Garmin works really well and will work with your phones built in GPS. The other option would be to use Nokia Maps which is preinstalled on the Nokia N96. Nokia Maps doesn't cost anything for route planning and navigation, although you do need to buy a licence for voice instructions - We've just managed to source the activation packs for Nokia Maps (£44.95 per year - direct with nokia is around £60). Hi, it does not work on the internal gps, but does on an external one. first using pc suite i copied all the files (including maps) over to the mass memory on the phone, in the phone settings turned off certificate check, then using pc suite installed Tom Tom Navigator 6 to the mass memory, works fine but i have noticed you get a lag when inputting a post code not all the time but some times, may just be my installation but am going to have a look at that will post here if i fix it. Hope this helps.

Hi Matthew, with mine i was using TomTom Navigator 6 on my Nokia n95, it was installed on the memory card, on my N96 i set date to 08/08/2007 set certificate check off and software install to all, then copied the contents of my N95 memory card over to the n96 mass storage usining pc suite (not the pc suite that comes with the n96 but latest download off of nokia as the one included with the n96 would not copy the files over), then using pc suite i ran the Tom Tom sis file to install. Files copied over include Maps directory,Tom Tom directory and some others, doing this Tom Tom works on the N96 and i have used it with a external gps, the only problem i have found is entering postcode but you do get there in the end.

Hi Matthew, glad its working, dont think there is a way to get the internal gps working with it, on yours do you find any problem entering a postcode for a destination? mine you get a delay when trying to input the postcode and allthough you get there in the end its bit of a pain.

I've followed your instructions, but can you please let me know where you installed TT? I've tried in both phone memory and mass storage but no no joy. When I click on the the TT logo in applications, nothing happens (no TT start splash screen, no spinning globe, nothing...) Cheers mate |

Hi, i first copied all the files over to MASS STORAGE (TomTom,Map ect) then i installed TomTom using the .sis file, dot use the Pc suite on the cd that came with your n96 but use/download the latest pc suite download off nokia. Also before u go any further back up your mass storage using pc suite because if you have a bit of trouble and format the mass storage u will loose the videos and some wallpapers ect, then uninstall TomTom, delete the TomTom map folder,TomTom folder ect restart your phone then follow the above instuctions again when finished install using the .sis file remebering to accept the install on the phone.

The lag your getting is from the phone not tomtom as the phone just dont have the power to rum tomtom as good as it would on a N95. I have tested on the N95 and N96 side by side as i have the 2 phones and there is a lot more delay with the N96 only wish i could take it back and get my money back from it. All so as you should know if you have more POI running with tomtom it will slow down the program when using it for tracking or nav but its still a good program as its free lol. I have tomtom and garmin XT 5.0 and i use tomtom over garmin as garmin is only my backup as i cant get maps for philippines for tomtom

Hi Villan, i have the n96 and n95 and must agree with your comments about the n96, my Tom Tom runs great on the 95 but not on n96, on the n96 i have tried disabling all poi`s ect but still get the delay on entering post codes, its a shame they downgraded the cpu on the n96 as this does affect the performance of the n96, build quality on the n96 is not as good as the n95 so as i am within my 14 day period i am going to return the n96. Thanks for tacking the trouble to reply to my post.
Bye, Ian... |
