Can the HTC pick up any wireless connection in the area?

It should be able to, however unless the wireless connection is open, i.e. it's not password word protected, you wont be able to use it unless you have the password

Yes ofc, you can auto-connect to any FREE (with no WPA/WPE pass encription) Wifi
