Default Sony Ericsson C902 and USB Charging problem

I have a Sony Ericsson C902 and I bought the Miniature USB Car Charger Adapter from yourselves. However this charger is not charging my handset at all. Having spoken to Sony Ericsson they told me that I will not be able charge my handset using the adapter and that it must be a Sony Ericsson charger. They also said that a USB cable must be plugged into PC or laptop which has the relevant drivers installed.

Are Sony Ericsson trying to fob me off and getting me to genuine products or is there truth behind what they are saying?

Hi Niceday,

From experience Sony Ericsson handsets should have no issues charging via the USB adapter and a USB cable, however it seems that Sony Ericsson may have changed the way C902 works in terms of charging. Where as before any compatible USB cable would allow you to charge your handset via a PC/laptop, mains or car adapter. Now it seems only genuine Sony Ericsson or specifically made chargers will work. Similar to the Apple iphone and iphone 3G and also the Nokia E71.

I would recommend firstly updating the firmware on the C902 via the Sony Ericsson website. Details of how to do this can be found here. Then trying the charger again. If you have no luck then see if you can charge other devices through the USB adapter. This should rule out the adapter being faulty. If all the above fails then it will confirm that the Sony Ericsson have definitely changed the way the handset charges.

In this instance I can only recommend opting for car charger made specifically for the Sony Ericsson handsets.

Hi did we get any further with this problem, I have just bought a C902 and have a genuine C902 USB lead which connects to my PC and charges the phone while also connecting to the PC suite. The phone has the most up to date software on it....However if I connect this phone via the lead through my USB car adaptor it connects like it does to my PC but will not charge the phone?

I've just been and tried some stock phones with some car charger adapters, and non of genuine sony ericsson cables that i used started charging, although they charge fine when using a PC.

I tried an unbranded sony ericsson USB cable and it started charging straight away, so this would suggest that Genuine Sony Ericsson chargers have been made not to charge handsets using a USB adapter.

So, in a nutshell, genuine cables won't work, but third party ones will.

This is the one I managed to use successfully:

3 in 1 Charger Pack - Sony Ericsson 'Fast-Port' Phones

Hope that helps!

Andy

Smile Found It

Hi Andy, Just for info I got my lead from a company who replied from E bay and were really helpful. It is a third party lead but reasonable quality and operates as a charger only lead between my adaptor and the C902. It works perfect in the car. S.E. said there wasnt such a thing !!

Thats the same as the third party leads we sell then - Sony Ericsson must have blocked the charging connection somehow.
